Over the next few days ISBU Association will show you how to make the transition from "rusty to respectable". As with any home it has a frame, an interior and an exterior. We want you to understand that an ISBU shipping container home or office can easily have the same beauty as a conventional home, or maybe easier. We will show you designs and floor plans for 1, 2, 3, 4, and even 5 bedroom homes, all made an ISBU shipping container superstructure. Soon you will see how you can get not only City approval, but even more important, the approval from your neighbors. Below is the evolution of the very basic 20' ISBU shipping container home or office. Most ISBU construction projects use 40HC containers or multiple attached 40HC to create the size home or office you will want.![]()

STEP 1- Choosing a good quality used shipping container that will soon become an ISBU module for your construction project. STEP 2- Remove the dirt, oxidation and any large dents. Inspect the floor, seal it or replace it. Weld any loose joints and sand with a grinder. Clean the interior and exterior well before painting. Paint with a good metal primer, then add Ceramic insulation beads to the final coats of paint. Polyurethane or epoxy paints are recommended. The ceramic insulation beads are not just being used for insulation and thermal protection, but for their other benefits on metal finishes. [Link] STEP 3- Technically it is an official ISBU now and ready for cutting, modification, and construction. Consult your local city, county or provincial office for compliance info and any licenses you may need. Before you cut, have your plans and understand clearly how to do cut and still retain the valuable strength. Login to your Member Section for more details. [Link] STEP 4- What look do you want? What does your building code require? A flat roof add the least cost but gives a very nice look. A Green Roof or patio can be a nice functional option. Remember, you don't need to add any roofing. Appearance is the main consideration. STEP 5- We are adding all these steps so you can realize your simple options and understand that shipping container based housing does not need to look like a shipping container. The biggest complaints we read and hear are that all Shipping Container designs are still raw ugly boxes. ...the general public wants something more and it's simple to achieve. STEP 6- All the unlimited options... Even the small basic box looks so much different with low cost stucco, siding, brick, or simply good paint, hardware, accessories and some creative color designs. So here you've seen some very basic changes to the "Box" that most people seem to miss or may not be aware they can do. Even the very basic 20'GP box can look much nicer and become more acceptable to build, buy or sell. Continue to the other links for more Cubic Inspirations.
