Wind turbines, solar energy and shipping containers--Some talk, some dream, some do it... One of our ISBU Members is more than talk. Whether you call them cargo containers, ISBU or shipping containers, many archtects, and designers talk about it but only with their pencils. One of our Texas members is showing us the way. Our ISBA Member is Scott Young who lives near Dallas-Ft. Worth in Texas. We have a large number of Members in Texas but we are especially impressed with Scott and his projects for a few reasons. - He has documented his projects exceptionally well from start to finish. Most people really don't do that. We strongly recommend documentation because you need the priceless memories, and secondly, other's need to learn. - Scott is very meticulous. As you will see with evry project, his finish work is exceptional and if you've surfed the web for "shipping container" construction projects you will see many projects that still look like rusty, dented, unfinished shipping containers when they're finished. ...we prefer to feature the "elite" builders, designers, and projects here at ou rISBU-Info.org website. - He's a busy guy but he has been terrific to answer all our questions and give us the necessary detail so you can learn. A 500 Watt Yangzhou from China, but purchased locally from an LA warehouse: $424 +$125 shipping, tower cost $350 and inverters about $1200. So as you see, the power inverter can be about 1/2 the total price of your Wind turbine project.
The added steel brace was attached to the ISBU roof for the extra support.
The tower is fit into the bracket he made.
Scott said "wind turbines aren't made to be put on the roofs of buildings but the strong ISBU construction made it possible".
Eye bolts for the cables are attached and welded, then tightened to about 80% strength.
The orderly connections and power inverter can be connected to a local power grid or directly to storage batteries.
Finished...
Many people are concerned about the vibration of the turbine sending a terrible humm down into the building due to all the metal. Scott reports that there is little or no vibration coming throuthe the ISBU and insulation. ..."a slight humm maybe through the cables but nothing to be concerned about".
